About David J. Marchant and Virology

David J. Marchant. I have been keenly interested in virology ever since I read Laurie Garrett’s book, The Coming Plague, in 1998. Incredible reading, highly recommended, and quite prescient of the current COVID19 pandemic. I completed my undergraduate degree in Physical Biochemistry at Simon Fraser University and took off to the UK with my wife, Sara. While in the UK I read Gina Kolata’s book ‘Flu’ that inspired me to learn more about respiratory viruses. I completed my PhD on HIV1 and HIV2 at UCL and just before I finished I met Laurie Garret and she signed my beloved copy of ‘Plague.’ I moved to Vancouver to be a postdoctoral fellow at St. Paul’s hospital, UBC to study cardio-respiratory viruses.

The book that inspired Marchant to a life of virology research.

A truly inspirational book that is still relevant today. This includes lessons from the past on implementation of public health policy on mobilization to mitigate the spread of infectious disease and vaccination campaigns. Chilling first hand stories from the virus hunters that discovered Lassa, Ebola and the Four Corners Hanta virus, and many more.

Dr. Ahmed Oraby

Postdoctoral fellow in Chemical and Structural Virology. Ahmed brings a much needed perspective in computational modeling, chemical design with a working expertise in virology.

Ryley on a ride with Marchant in the Edmonton River Valley. We are fairly sure the tree was dead prior to the incident, well, regardless, it is now. Ryley is now much better at staying on top of his bicycle as opposed to the inverse.
